The Influence of American Society:  Did you see the influence of the changing family, SES, bullying, alcohol, drugs, sex, sexual harassment, or other issues in your experience?

During my Service Learning Experience I did not notice any sex, alcohol, drugs, or sexual harassment behaviors. Maybe, because I was working with small children; those behaviors weren't present during my time. Of course, a small amount of bullying did occur. Kids will be kids, and want the toys someone else may have and take it. Or when you get the occasional push and shove match that needs to be taken care of. Other then that, that's the only bullying that occured. I did notice some SES pratices. If SES deals with No Child Left Behind that was definitely present during my experience. Ms. Frizzle always tried to keep every child on the same pace and level. She wanted she to make sure that every child understood what was being taught before she moved to the next subject or activity. Family is really important in helping a child grow and succeed. In order for a child to grow there has to be a strong foundation, and strong support. The foundation being the parents and immediate family. The support being preachers, church, friends, teachers, doctors etc. With a strong fondation, and sterity support, makes a beautiful structure.

Organization of schools: What purposes of school and what goals of school came to light during your ASL experience?  Discuss the types of schools you experienced. Compare and contrast the levels of schools you visited. Which characteristics of an effective school did you see?  Discuss frequent monitoring of student progress that you noted during your ASL experience.  Consider what you know about the organization of elementary, middle, junior high and high schools.  Which type of school is best suited to your academic and personal characteristics and why?

I have always believed that school was important. Although there are days when I don't want to attend I strongly believe that without schooling, it's rare for a child to be comepletely successful. I also know that although different schools may not share all the same goals in mind, I know that one goal they all share is educating children in their best possible ability. One school I did observe at was a school for children with diabilities. That was a new experience for me because I never knew there was a school in town that catered to children with disabilities. Teacher's make up different lesson plans for each child in helping them children succeed. It would be like five students to one teacher and two or three assistants and volunteers. That school is really based on helping children to become progressive adults. Another school that I observed at was the school of the arts. Children that attend this school are gifted. This is was really a hands on school by letting the children solve their own problems, and getting their own solutions. Elementary is best suited for my academic and personal characteristics because I love being around at this age level. I love working with them by helping the grow and learn more. They're still a little innocent at this age. An age I can deal with.
